Pakistan - Human Rights

Australia supports a Pakistan that is peaceful, prosperous and democratic.

The Australian Government continues to call for all parties to uphold democracy and adhere to the rule of law, and to respect and promote human rights for all.

The Australian Government regularly engages with all sides of politics, including through our High Commission in Pakistan. The High Commissioner most recently met senior members of the PTI party in March and with Mr Khan in May.

We regularly raise human rights directly with the Government of Pakistan, including to underscore the importance of freedom of expression and of association, foster tolerance, and strengthen civil society and its institutions. The Australian Government did so most recently in May. We also continue to raise our concerns internationally, including at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The Australian High Commission in Islamabad continues to closely monitor developments in Pakistan, including for any security or consular implications for Australians in Pakistan.
