The University of Wollongong will officially open the Energy Futures Zone at Science Space on Thursday 20 November, unveiling an immersive exhibition that explores the technologies powering Australia’s clean energy transformation.
Federal Member for Cunningham Ms Alison Byrnes MP and UOW Vice-Chancellor and President Professor G.Q. Max Lu AO will launch the Energy Futures Zone during a ceremony at Science Space.
“For more than 35 years, Science Space has inspired curiosity and a passion for STEM among young people. This new exhibition takes that mission to the next level, connecting our community with the energy research and innovations shaping Australia’s future,” Professor Lu said.
“The Energy Futures Zone is where research meets real-world impact, celebrating local achievement and inspiring the next generation to pursue STEM skills and energy careers critical to our clean energy transition.”
Member for Cunningham, Alison Byrnes said she was excited to see the Energy Futures Zone open today, after years of passion and dedication from the uni’s Energy Futures Network team.
“The Illawarra is a renewable energy powerhouse. It is absolutely vital that we seize the opportunities that renewable energy provides for our future, creating local jobs and inspiring local innovation on a global scale.”
“Not only is this a fun zone for kids and adults alike, it is yet another step towards seeing those opportunities realised, placing the Illawarra on the global stage and educating our workforce of the future. Showing kids and adults what our future renewable energy system will look like, giving them ideas and drive for the future ahead.”
“I was delighted to secure this critical investment from the Albanese Labor Government, along with a further $2.5 million for Wollongong TAFE, to educate our young people and support local business in the renewable energy sector,” Ms Byrnes said.
Featuring 29 interactive exhibits, the Energy Futures Zone invites visitors to get hands-on with renewable energy and sustainable manufacturing innovations, showcasing how science and technology are shaping a cleaner, smarter future. It will connect visitors with UOW's world-leading energy research and the region's emerging role as a clean energy hub.
Science Space Director Stuart Creal said the new exhibition is a transformational addition to the centre.
“Visitors can simulate running a renewable power grid, explore how hydrogen fuel cells work, and see how energy storage is changing everyday life,” Mr Creal said. “It’s designed to make energy science tangible and exciting for all ages.”
The Energy Futures Zone was funded by a $2.5 million grant from the Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts. It supports the broader $10 million Australian Government funded Energy Futures Skills Centre initiative to train the workforce for the energy industries of the future.
