The Albanese Labor Government is delivering 27 new social and affordable homes in Wollongong through Labor’s Housing Australia Future Fund.
Developed by the Housing Trust and with funding contributions from the NSW Government and Wollongong City Council, the now-completed Warruya complex will support local frontline workers, and at-risk local families to find secure, stable and affordable homes.
The brand-new apartment complex is ideally located in the heart of the Wollongong CBD, near the hospital precinct, and local public transport.
We know that the underlying solution to Australia’s housing shortage is to build more market homes and a bigger buffer of social and affordable homes for more vulnerable Australians.
That’s exactly what these homes are about – looking after Australians doing it tough, while adding to overall supply.
This announcement adds to the Albanese Government’s already substantial housing agenda for the Illawarra, which includes:
- Delivering 55,000 social and affordable homes across Australia through the HAFF and other programs, including 87 complete or currently underway in Cunningham.
- 14 dwellings in Wollongong for women and children experiencing family and domestic violence, and for older women at risk of homelessness.
- Helping more than 1,000 locals in the electorate of Cunningham into homeownership thanks to Labor’s 5% Deposit Scheme.
- Levelling the playing fields at auction for renters and first home buyers through our reforms to negative gearing.
- Getting a better deal for renters by ending no-grounds evictions through our rental reforms with the NSW Government.
There’s more work to do, but today’s announcement shows what’s possible when all levels of government work together to tackle this generational challenge.
